Charging Your Cell Phone In A Public Port Puts You At Risk

This is a practice known as 'juice jacking' and occurs when people connect their cell phones to charge the battery in public USB ports that have been infected with malware. This allows hackers to access the phone and steal the information.

Charging the cell phone in a public port, such as those in airports, shopping malls, or other places, could cause the device to become infected with a virus that allows hackers to steal data and personal information.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's office warned that users should never charge their cell phone battery in public USB ports. These public chargers can be hacked into containing a virus that steals cell phone data while charging.

"You may have seen a public USB charging station at an airport or shopping center. But be careful, a free charge could end up draining your bank account," Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Luke Sisak said in a warning video.

On some occasions, when connecting the cell phone to public ports, a message appears that says if you trust the device. It is important to choose the "no" option, to avoid giving access to sensitive information.

USB data lockers are the best option to use USB power banks without being hacked and are also known as "USB condoms".

These devices are small USB adapters with input and output ports that allow power to the device but block data exchange.

Having a USB "data lock" is an inexpensive way to have peace of mind. Its price is around $10 and is small , so it can be easily transported anywhere.
